What will be the impact on driverless cars on people travel? Will the time spent on roads be reduced?
In a nutshell, CAVs will enable vehicles to interact with each other and the smart world around it. Primarily, the connected vehicle concept is about supplying actionable insights to drivers or vehicles and help them in making decisions that are more informed. To invigorate this space, several vendors and OEM leaders are working to connect internal disciplines into a comprehensive platform to drive down the manufacturing costs of CAVs and make them safer and smarter. Albeit there are many companies committed to supplementing the capability of CAVs, one company that has created a buzz in the space is the Wayville-based firm— Cohda Wireless. The firm’s myriad of V2X solutions includes Road SIDE, On Board, and Radio Module hardware products and software stacks from Access Layer to the Applications Layer.
Being one of the pioneers in developing CAVs, Cohda Wireless renders market-proven applications to connect vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians for making streets safer, smarter, and more greener. The firm’s repertoire of solutions combines vehicles with smart city infrastructure to enable accurate vehicle positioning. The proprietary wireless technology of the firm allows for vehicles to see around the corners, comprehend the GPS’s unavailability, and interact with traffic infrastructure in real time.
The solutions collectively known as V2X spans across Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P). With Cohda V2X technology in their arsenal, vehicles can understand the counterfeits in roads and accurately position their vehicles in places even when GPS does not work. Further, cars can examine the corners and evaluate the changing weather conditions such as rain, snow, and fog without embedding any expensive sensors.
Wireless V2X Solutions
Cohda provides a fifth-generation On-Board Unit (OBU)—MK5 for assisting car manufacturers in taking field trials and can also be used as a design reference for automotive production. The small, low-cost, rugged module can exchange data at high speeds and provide insights into potential hazards and safety-critical scenarios. In adverse weather conditions where GPS connectivity or any line of sight is not available, the radio performance of MK5 is unmatchable. Built with the same proprietary chipset as the MK5 OBU, MK5 RSU is a rugged outdoor unit with integrated dual antennas designed for smart city deployments. With MK5 RSU, enterprises get exceptional range and coverage in a single, self-contained unit capable of covering all approaches for an intersection.
Additionally, Cohda Wireless also provides a suite of “Day One” applications that have become the industry standard in V2X production. The firm’s V2X applications are one of the most widely used technology globally.

Making Roads Safer
According to a recent survey from the US Department of Transport, 95 percent of road accidents happen owing to human errors. At Cohda Wireless, the firm is committed to making roads safer for drivers and vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. With V2X, road collisions can be reduced by over 80 percent along with reducing accident and pollution. Today, Cohda’s hardware-agnostic V2X stacks are leveraged by 60 percent of connected vehicles worldwide and helping them to make smarter and safer cities. “Cohda’s V2X technology allows vehicles to ‘speak to each other’ to extend their perception horizon. “The technology provides the vehicle with an awareness of its environment and risk factors associated with it, consistently and accurately up to ten times per second, enabling it to make decisions that a human being would not be capable of making as the driver of the vehicle,” says Paul Alexander, CTO of Cohda Wireless.
Approaches for Deploying V2X
Over the years, the firm’s V2X technology has assisted many of its clientele in building and increasing the efficacy of automated cars. A case worth mentioning is of two revolutionary electric motorbikes who took an 80-day around the world tour. Named as STORM Eindhoven and powered by Connected Vehicle solutions from Cohda Wireless, this project was an initiative of a team involving 23 students from the Netherland-based Eindhoven University. The bikes covered 26,000 kilometers in 80 days and used Cohda’s MK5 OBUs to facilitate autonomous communication and vehicles and infrastructure in proximity. Apart from examining the performance of the vehicle, Cohda solutions also improved vehicle safety and efficiency.
Joining Hands for Supplementing Traffic Infrastructure
Recently, Cohda Wireless signed an agreement with ATC and BRAUMS to improve the traffic infrastructure and management systems to accommodate more connected vehicles on the roads. ATC and Braums have established partners for delivering traffic management systems and infrastructure and the MOU signed between the three parties will enable the SCATS controllers from ATC to incorporate Cohda’s V2X communication platform. “Connecting Cohda’s roadside units to SCATS controllers will provide a world of information that can be leveraged to enhance traffic flow and safety. It will provide very detailed information on the speed and direction of connected vehicles as well as detect the presence of pedestrians and cyclists through their smartphones which can be relayed to vehicles and a central control room,” cites Paul Gray, CEO of Cohda Wireless. The industry veteran further adds, “A V2X-enhanced SCATS system can also be applied for vehicle prioritization, whether it be to keep buses and freight moving to prevent traffic congestion or to enhance access for emergency vehicles. The signal timing information can be transmitted to connected cars to facilitate the economic and environmentally preferable ‘green wave’ driving style.”
As a part of its expansion plans, Cohda Wireless recently established an office in Shanghai to leverage the rapidly evolving smart cities and autonomous car markets of the country. Additionally, Cohda’s V2X technology also complements other proprietary technology used by CAVs such as cameras, sensors, radars, and lidars. In the years ahead, the firm intends to continue invigorating the automated space with market its market-proven solutions and products.
