Mobility Insight: Smart Transportation Management for Smart Cities

Dov Ganor, Co-Founder & CEO, Mobility InsightDov Ganor, Co-Founder & CEO Imagine a crowded urban city on a Monday morning. Despite the ‘peak hour,’ there’s no sign of congested roads and traffic runs surprisingly smooth. A sensor-embedded environment enables continuous 2-way communication with all the vehicles, with vast amounts of data being generated and processed in real time to ensure a seamless journey. A city where mobility and the environment work hand in hand, resulting in commuters reaching their destination without being caught up in a traffic snarl.

Every commuter in an urban city believes this is a pipe dream. While traffic is an inevitable part of the daily grind, connected devices, continuous data streams, and a smart synchronizing engine could change all that.

In the wake of technology disruption, technology giants such as Waze and Google are providing the citizens a chance to save time and money on their daily commute through a combination of near real-time navigation and automation capabilities. While these applications have become the de facto interface between the physical and the digital world, by providing users with a sense of direction, they haven’t been able to contribute to the idea of a smart city as a whole. This is what Mobility Insight intends to change.

“Our vision is to be an engine, enhancing the smart city’s ability to manage its transportation network. We optimize traffic for everybody; not just at the consumer end with applications like Waze or Google Maps, but for all residents and visitors, for goods and freight traffic,” states Dov Ganor, co-founder and CEO of Mobility Insight. In doing so, Mobility Insight (Mobi) aims to revolutionize the road network with a powerful combination of the latest advancement in technology—Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), cellular networks, smartphones, and more.

The main challenge smart cities face is a growing demand for mobility whilst road capacity is bound by infrastructure development limits. Furthermore, there is a lack of tools to help cities gain back control and manage the demand for services – to increase convenience, speed, and predictability. Mobi holds the secret to make this seemingly impossible future possible. “With more and more technology in place, city officials need to have high processing capability, data analytics, and a decision support tools that can help them manage the ever-rising complexity of today’s city ecosystem,” highlights Ganor. The company acts as the missing link that provides smart cities with tools to optimize their road network and handle congestion emergence in smart cities.

We bring even more value to the city’s existing investments to further benefit a city by taking existing data and making it more useful, through leveraging multiple data sources

Delivering Navigation Expertise

Mobi offers a turnkey solution that leverages a unique combination of artificial intelligence, machine learning and traffic simulation on the one hand, and data fusion, IoT and Vehicle to Everything (V2X) on the other. The powerful combination is used to collect and understand data from disparate data sources and provide city officials the ability to predict and deliver real-time optimized solutions for streamlining the transportation network. “Our traffic information and mobility management platform provide city officials with alerts and road network Key Performance Indicator (KPIs) in real time that enable detecting and addressing congestion emergence, just in time to preempt its buildup, and for the network to avoid reaching a gridlock,” explains Ganor.

Diving into the specifications, Mobi’s transportation management solutions collect the necessary data from any available source on a wireless sensor network. These could be sensors that a city has deployed over the years, cellular data, or information integrated from Google Maps. This pool of information then goes through Mobi’s cutting edge AI cloud engine. Having a cloud deployment with a solution-as-a-service model not only allows the city officials to access the traffic information from anywhere across the globe but also minimizes the need for any form of physical installation. On top of the engine there is a decision support system—placed in the city’s traffic control centers or integrated with other systems and real-time applications—that enables users to visualize the data, gain actionable insights and compare alternatives. Mobi has also reinforced its solution with state of the art business intelligence (BI) tools to help the city formulate the right decisions for a smoother traffic flow during peak hours. “We bring even more value to a city’s existing investments to further benefit the users by taking existing data and making it more useful, through consolidation of multiple data sources,” says Ganor.

What places Mobi’s solution a cut above the rest is its ability to deliver a cost-effective solution for city-scale coverage that accurately maps origin-to-destination mobility demand patterns, provides systemic alerts regarding congestion emergence, and offers remedies based on network optimization. These features combined are instrumental in anticipating bottlenecks and preempting gridlocks.

Making a Smart City Smarter

The success of Mobi’s revolutionary idea can be attributed to its team of experts from various fields. Backed by a rich experience of more than a decade in the traffic information industry, the team’s dexterity in analytics, embedded systems, and IoT is meeting the challenge of congestion in the connected vehicle era.

Mobi started this journey of solving the gridlock dilemma in Israel, a great place to test new technologies owing to the country’s adaptability to the latest innovations. Following the solution’s success in traffic management, the company soon extended its reach to Atlanta, U.S. After Ganor met the former CIO of Atlanta, Samir Saini, a decision was made to incorporate Mobi into the Renew Atlanta initiative, a $250M effort to improve Atlanta’s infrastructure. With the overarching goal of decreasing Atlanta’s infamous traffic condition, Mobi assisted the city with an initial focus on measuring and managing mass crowd events in areas where the city needed to concentrate on tasks that are more urgent. Furthermore, Mobi has also helped manage mass crowd events such as Atlanta Falcon’s football games and will be a key component in preparing and managing traffic around Super Bowl LII taking place in the city in February. Mobi extracts predictive and optimized actionable insights from traffic data in real time, providing the city officials with full mobility situational awareness and helping the city make changes to traffic signal timing and traffic police deployment. Atlanta uses Mobi’s cloud analytics platform and event scorecards to debrief and make decisions about changes to improve ingress and egress for upcoming events.

More importantly perhaps, Mobi brings hope of a solution to a trend that saw congestion increasing by 50 percent in the last 10 years across the US. “We are very excited about the opportunity to work with Mobi. Mobi’s technology, mobility analytics, and situational awareness is going to expand our collection of tools that will enable us to monitor and manage downtown Atlanta event traffic more proactively and effectively,” said Keary Lord, Atkins, ITS/Traffic Manager Renew Atlanta /TSPLOST PMT.

The Future of Transportation

Gearing up for 2019, Mobi’s goal ahead is to expand its offering to more cities in the U.S. with its third generation mobility optimization tool for transportation management operators. “Our task is to show smart cities how our technology can improve the usability of their entire existing network, with a cost lower than what is required to build new infrastructure,” adds Ganor. While numerous companies uncover innovations around decision support, simulation, and analytics, Mobi holds a sweet spot in the intelligent transportation marketplace, synchronizing various tools to solve the transportation challenges and providing an end-to-end solution. The Mobi team is truly aligned with the company’s values, goals, and vision of smart cities, constantly working on newer features. With continuous system improvements, more basic tools are being added to their suite that includes data analytics, traffic predictions, and transportation management.

"Our vision is to be what fuels the engine, powering the smart city’s ability to manage their transportation network"

“We have built Mobi by providing technology that helps cities, residents, and visitors achieve their overall transportation goals,” says Ganor. In the coming years, the company will offer its new connected vehicle technology as an initial operational solution - we are already in the midst of development, and proofs of concept have already been demonstrated. In addition, Mobi will also provide new traffic light tools that will enhance the city’s capability to manage their traffic better.
